Tony Aristy

Painter

Tony Aristy’s still life paintings demonstrate a powerful, physical visuality originaring in his Latin American experience. He paints his brooms with the vigour of the seventeenth century Spanish school of Rivera and sets them against a delicate background reminiscents of the eighteenth century. The new feature in this dynamic dance with the past is Aristy’s striking use of cast shadow makes makes us aware of the artifice of the painter as only a late twentieth century artist would. Other broom studies in his show at Providence College Hunt-Cavanagh Gallery introduce the glowing yellows, greens and tones of red often seen in the Aristy’s Caribbean homeland of the Dominican Republic.
